Why convert WebP to PNG?
Guide last reviewed: 28 September 2026
WebP is a modern, efficient format built by Google, but not every app, older device, or design tool accepts it β PNG is the most universally supported lossless format, recognized by essentially every image editor, operating system, and platform built in the last 25 years. Converting keeps full quality and any transparency your WebP file has, while giving you a file format nothing will reject.
How to convert WebP to PNG
- Bring in your WebP file β drop it onto the page or click to browse for it.
- The conversion happens automatically β no settings to configure.
- Preview the result, then click Download PNG.
What actually happens during conversion
Your browser decodes the WebP file into raw pixel data (including its alpha/transparency channel, if it has one), then re-encodes that same pixel data as a PNG. Because PNG is lossless, no visual information is discarded in this step β the output should look identical to the source WebP, just wrapped in a more universally compatible file format. Note that if the original WebP itself used WebP's lossy compression mode, whatever quality loss it already had is preserved as-is; converting to PNG doesn't add further loss, but it also can't recover detail the WebP encoding already discarded.
Common uses
People convert WebP to PNG when a design tool, older software, or a specific upload form doesn't accept WebP; when they need guaranteed universal compatibility for an image going into a document or presentation; or when preparing a WebP image (including one with transparency) for further editing in a program that handles PNG more reliably.
Frequently asked questions
Will I lose any quality converting WebP to PNG?
No additional loss is introduced by this conversion itself. If your source WebP was saved with WebP's lossy compression, that loss is already baked in and carries over β PNG can't restore detail that was already discarded before you got the file.
Does the transparency carry over?
Yes β PNG and WebP both support a full alpha transparency channel, so it transfers over exactly during conversion.
Why is the PNG larger than the original WebP?
This is expected β PNG's lossless compression is generally less space-efficient for photographic content than WebP's, so the same image typically produces a larger file as a PNG.
What about animated WebP files?
This tool handles static WebP images. An animated WebP would only convert its first frame, so it's not a suitable path for preserving animation β for that, a dedicated video/GIF conversion tool would be needed instead.
