Why convert JPG to PNG?

Guide last reviewed: 28 September 2026

JPG uses lossy compression β€” every save discards a little image data to keep the file small, and repeated edits/re-saves compound that loss over time. PNG is lossless: once converted, the pixels stay exactly as they are no matter how many times you open, edit, or re-save the file afterward. PNG also supports transparency, which JPG cannot represent at all under any settings, so it's the right target format if you plan to edit the image further (especially anything involving cutting out a subject), layer it over other content, or simply want to stop losing quality on every subsequent save.

How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. Drag a JPG or JPEG photo into the drop zone, or click to choose one.
  2. The conversion happens automatically β€” no settings to configure, since PNG has no quality slider to tune.
  3. Preview the result, then click Download PNG.

What actually changes (and what doesn't)

The visible image itself doesn't change at all β€” you won't see any difference in a side-by-side comparison. What changes is the file format underneath: PNG stores every pixel's exact value directly (optionally with lossless compression that never discards information), while JPG approximates the image using a compression algorithm tuned for photographs. Converting a JPG to PNG doesn't "undo" any quality loss the JPG already has baked in from its own compression β€” it simply stops any further loss from happening on future saves, and unlocks transparency support if you go on to edit the image.

Common uses

People convert JPG to PNG before editing a photo further in another tool (to avoid compounding quality loss across multiple saves), before adding transparency (for example, after using our Background Remover, which always outputs PNG), or when a platform or print process specifically requires a lossless format.

Frequently asked questions

Will converting JPG to PNG make my photo look better?

No β€” it preserves the photo exactly as it looks right now; it can't remove compression artifacts the JPG already has. What it does is prevent any further quality loss from future edits and saves.

Why is the PNG file bigger than the original JPG?

This is normal and expected. PNG's lossless storage is inherently less space-efficient for photographic content than JPG's lossy compression β€” you're trading file size for zero further quality loss and transparency support.

Does this add transparency to my photo?

No β€” a JPG has no transparency to begin with, so the converted PNG is fully opaque, just like the original. PNG simply makes transparency possible for any future editing, it doesn't create it from nothing.

Is there a file size limit?

No artificial limit β€” since everything runs in your browser's own memory, the practical limit is your device's available memory for very large images.
