Best with a signature on plain white or light paper
How this works
Guide last reviewed: 28 September 2026
Unlike a full AI background remover, isolating a signature is a much simpler problem: the background is (almost always) a single plain, light color, and the ink is much darker. This tool measures each pixel's brightness (a weighted average of its red, green, and blue values, matching how the human eye perceives brightness) and makes anything above your threshold transparent, leaving just the ink. Pixels right around the threshold fade smoothly rather than cutting off sharply, so strokes come out with soft, natural edges instead of a jagged, pixelated outline.
How to make a signature transparent
- Photograph or scan your signature on plain white or light paper, with even lighting and no shadows across the page.
- Bring that photo into the tool — drag it in or click to browse for the file.
- Adjust the Background threshold slider: lower it if background specks or shadows remain visible, raise it if parts of the signature itself are fading away.
- Optionally enable Make ink solid black for a crisp, uniform stamp-style result rather than the pen's natural color and stroke variation.
- Download the transparent PNG.
Getting a clean result
- Even, shadow-free lighting matters more than anything else. A shadow across part of the page reads as a darker "background" to the threshold detector, and either gets left in or forces you to raise the threshold so high that faint parts of the signature disappear too.
- Plain paper beats patterned or lined paper. Ruled lines or a letterhead can get caught by the threshold along with the signature — if you have a choice, sign on a blank area.
- A darker pen (black or dark blue) gives more contrast against the paper than a light gel pen or pencil, making the threshold easier to set correctly.
- If a plain-paper photo isn't an option — a patterned background, a photo of a signed document you can't re-shoot — our full AI Background Remover handles arbitrary backgrounds, though it's a heavier tool for a simpler job.
Common uses
People use this to create a reusable transparent signature for signing documents digitally, add a personal signature to an email footer or website, or prepare a signature for a certificate, contract template, or scanned form. A transparent PNG signature can be layered onto any document or image without the white paper background showing.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the threshold need adjusting instead of working automatically?
Paper brightness, lighting, ink color, and camera or scanner settings all vary, so there's no single threshold that works for every photo. The slider lets you dial it in for your specific image in a couple of seconds rather than requiring a "perfect" photo.
What does "Make ink solid black" actually change?
It recolors every non-transparent pixel to pure black, regardless of the pen's actual color or any faint anti-aliasing variation — useful for a clean, uniform look, though it does discard the natural look of the original ink.
Will this work on a signature with a colored background, like a photo?
Not well — this tool assumes a plain, roughly uniform light background. For anything more complex, use our full AI Background Remover, which can separate a subject from any background.
Can I use the result for legal or official documents?
That depends entirely on the requirements of whoever is receiving the document, not on this tool — some contexts require a specific e-signature process rather than an image of a handwritten signature. Check with the receiving party if you're unsure.
