Getting a compliant photo

Guide last reviewed: 28 September 2026

This tool crops and resizes your photo to the exact pixel dimensions each country's passport/ID photo spec requires, at 300 DPI (dots per inch) — the standard resolution print labs and government photo processors expect, so the file prints at the correct physical size without needing any further resizing. It does not verify compliance with every rule (background color, expression, head tilt, glasses, shadows), since those are visually checked by the issuing authority during your application, not something any crop tool can guarantee automatically.

How to make a passport photo

  1. Take or choose a photo: face the camera directly, neutral expression, plain light background, even lighting with no harsh shadows.
  2. Add that photo to the tool — drag it in, or click to browse for the file.
  3. Select the correct photo size for your country/document from the dropdown.
  4. Position and resize the crop box so your head fills roughly 70–80% of the frame, centered, with a little room above the head.
  5. Click Crop & Preview, check the result, and download.

Size reference (at 300 DPI)

  • US Passport / Visa — 2×2 in (51×51 mm) → 600×600px
  • UK / EU / Schengen — 35×45 mm → 413×531px
  • India Passport — 2×2 in (51×51 mm) → 600×600px
  • Canada Passport — 50×70 mm → 591×827px
  • Australia Passport — 35×45 mm → 413×531px

Common rejection reasons to avoid

  • Shadows on the face or background — even, diffuse lighting from the front avoids harsh shadows under the eyes, nose, or behind the head.
  • A non-plain or non-white/light background — patterns, other people, or furniture in frame are common rejection reasons. If you can't get a clean background, use our AI Background Remover first, then crop the result here.
  • Head too small, too large, or off-center — most specs require the head (chin to crown) to occupy a specific proportion of the frame; use the crop box's fit as your guide, aiming for roughly 70–80% frame height.
  • Smiling, tilted head, or glasses with glare — most passport photo rules require a neutral, front-facing expression and no glasses glare (or no glasses at all, depending on the country).

Frequently asked questions

Does this guarantee my photo will be accepted?

No — it produces a photo at the correct pixel dimensions and print resolution, but expression, lighting, background cleanliness, and other visual rules are checked by whoever processes your application, not by this tool.

Why is the resolution fixed at 300 DPI?

300 DPI is the standard resolution photo labs and most government processors expect for print-quality output — it's high enough that the printed photo looks sharp at its small physical size (typically 2×2 inches or similar).

My photo has a busy or colored background — what do I do?

Run it through our AI Background Remover first to remove the background, place it on a plain white background, then come back here to crop and resize to the correct dimensions.

Can I use this for a driver's license or other ID photo, not just a passport?

The built-in presets cover passport-style specs for several countries. Many other ID photos share similar 2×2in or 35×45mm sizing — check your specific document's exact requirement, since some IDs use different dimensions entirely.
